What is menopause?

Welcome to my guide on menopause, a natural phase in every woman's life cycle. This life changing journey is marked by the reduction of vital hormones - namely oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. While the average age of menopause in the UK is around 51, individual experiences vary, with some women navigating this phase earlier or later, making each woman's journey truly unique.

For some women the transition phase can last between 10-20 years, while for others it may be 5-7 years or less. It is said that 9 out of 10 women feel some sort of change in their body or struggle with impact from menopause.

Perimenopause

The phase before reaching the menopause milestone, is the perimenopause. A crucial but often overlooked phase that can begin in our early 40s. It's during perimenopause that impacts can manifest, leaving some feeling confused or frustrated and others struggling with sapping effects. Women over 45 should be diagnosed by symptoms not only blood tests. They might still be menstruating but suffering the impact of menopause. Too many women have been wrongly diagnosed and given anti depressants or told they are too young to be menopausal. If you don't feel like your regular self, it is worth persevering and getting the correct diagnosis. Doing your own research can be helpful and start tracking your symptoms, depending on what you have been doing on a daily basis. Taking your results to your GP can be very useful, as no two women experience the transformation in the same way. The question arises though- why aren't we properly informed about perimenopause and its potential effects on our lives earlier on? If your GP is not listening to you I urge you to ask for a second opinion. OR book to see a private menopause specialist.

Menopause

The medical definition of menopause is once you've experienced a period for 12 consecutive months without menstruating. It is that day, when you can count backwards 12 months without your period. This day signals the onset of postmenopause.
